If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve tried to make health changes before. Maybe you’ve had some starts and stops along the way, and that’s perfectly normal. Sustainable health isn’t a destination; it’s a journey that evolves with each step we take. Today I want to share how a slow and steady approach can make this journey feel less daunting and more achievable.
Why Taking It Slow Is the Way to Go
Think about the last time you tried to tackle a big project all at once - it’s overwhelming, right? That feeling is similar when we attempt to overhaul our health overnight. It’s a lot, and it often leads to frustration, stress and overwhelm. That’s why I advocate for a gradual, sustainable health approach - it’s gentler on you and, frankly, a lot more effective.
Sustainable Health - Breaking It Down:
Starting Where You Are
Let’s take an honest look at your current habits and routines. What does a typical day look like for you food-wise? Maybe you’re someone who loves a mid-morning snack, or perhaps lunch often slips by unnoticed. Identifying these habits is important - not to judge, but to set the stage for thoughtful changes for your sustainable health journey. If your day is fuelled by sugary snacks to keep you going, there are changes you can make to transition off the junk easy to do.
Small, Manageable Changes
How about starting with one small dietary tweak? Nothing too dramatic, just a simple adjustment. If you’re fond of sugary drinks, maybe try replacing your usual soda with a sparkling water infused with a splash of natural juice. Or if breakfast often slips your mind, why not experiment with a quick, nutritious meal you’ve prepped ahead of time? Loading up on protein keeps you feeling full and satisfied without any energy crashes.
It’s common to gravitate toward sugary snacks or comfort foods, especially during busy or stressful times. This isn’t about labeling these habits as bad, but rather understanding them as patterns that can be adjusted thoughtfully and gradually. This is where planning comes in to make sustainable health easier.
My Sustainable Health Journey: Taking the First Steps
When I decided it was time for a change, I didn’t head straight for the gym; instead, I started with something as simple as walking. Initially, it was just five minutes a day because that was all I could manage without causing too much discomfort to my knees and hips. Over time, as I built up my strength and endurance, those few minutes turned into longer walks. It wasn’t about pushing through pain; it was about gradually increasing my capacity in a way that felt right for my body.
I also didn’t remove all my favourite foods and replace them with celery sticks! I added in healthy options and started to increase my protein. Soon I was on a sustainable health journey, eating more whole foods and less junk without really thinking about it.
Making Changes Stick
Incorporating new habits into daily life is key for sustainable health success. For me, this does involve meal planning and preparation. I make sure to plan my meals in advance and prep them ahead of time, which helps me avoid the temptation of grabbing junk food. In fact, I don’t keep junk food in the house at all. This practice isn’t just about dieting; it’s about creating a lifestyle that supports my health goals without feeling restrictive. Meal planning can seem overwhelming for many but just having some hard boiled eggs, cooked chicken and some cut up veggies ready to go in the fridge is super helpful!
Maintaining Momentum
Once you’ve established routines that resonate with your lifestyle, the next challenge is to maintain them consistently. This isn’t about sticking rigidly to a plan but about making these healthier choices a natural part of your day-to-day life. For example, by having healthy meals ready to go, you remove the stress and the guesswork from eating well. It’s these kinds of systems that turn a sustainable health plan into a way of living. When you make a meal that’s easy to double, do that and freeze one for later.
A Year From Now…
Imagine where you could be a year from now if you start with small changes today. These might not seem significant individually, but over time, they accumulate into substantial sustainable health improvements. You might find yourself feeling better, more energized, and perhaps even happier with your health.
As you start this journey, remember, this guide is here to offer ideas and inspiration, not to push you from behind. It’s about progress, not perfection, and finding joy in the small successes that lead to big changes.
Are you ready to try out a small change today? Remember, this is your sustainable health journey, and it’s all about finding what works uniquely for you. Let’s make this next year one of health, happiness, and personal growth. I’m excited to hear about the steps you’re taking, and remember, I’m just a message away if you need a friendly tip or two. Let’s do this, together, one step at a time!
